How to Enroll

OCG’s academic year begins in early August (please see our Calendar for exact dates). Most new students enter at the beginning of the school year. If you are interested in Orange Coast Gakuen after reading about our curriculum, our class descriptions, and our events; here are the next steps you can take:

Step 1: Attend a Preview Day on campus

OCG holds several Preview Days each year that take place on our campus during a regular school day. During Preview Day, families can:

  • Visit the school and meet school officers and teachers

  • Observe a school morning assembly

  • Learn about our curriculum and programs

  • Understand our school governance and policies

  • Tour the campus and observe a classroom

  • Participate in a Q&A session

Step 2: Join a Prospective Student List

After touring the school during Preview Day, you will be invited to complete some forms to join a Prospective Student List for the next year. Your child may also participate in a short assessment to determine their potential class placement and track (JHL or JFL) for the next year.

Joining the Prospective Student List allows us to continue to communicate with you further about the enrollment process. It is neither a promise of admission nor a commitment from you to enroll if you are offered a spot.

Step 3: Wait. OCG will complete re-enrollment of current students

Between April and May, OCG re-enrolls current students and siblings of current families for the next year. During this process, we will determine how many spots are available in each class for new students and families. We appreciate your patience.

Step 4: OCG will contact families from the Prospective Student List

After our re-enrollment concludes, we will begin to contact new students with offers of enrollment from the Prospective Student List. Families with students on the Prospective Student List can expect to be contacted around June. Not every student on the Prospective Student List will be offered enrollment, as this all depends on space. If there isn’t enough space, you will be offered a waiting list spot, in case a student drops from the roster.

FAQ about Enrollment

What if I can’t make it to any Preview Days?

We prioritize families who have attended a Preview Day in joining the Prospective Student List.

However, if you are unable to attend any of the previous year’s Preview days, you can complete an Enrollment Interest Form

We will contact families from the Enrollment Interest Form after we have concluded enrollment offers from the Prospective Student List. Depending on the class and the year, we might have space available.

If I already have a child enrolled at OCG, do I need to attend Preview Day?

No. If you already have a child enrolled at OCG and you wish to re-enroll for next year, or if you wish to enroll a new sibling, you do not need to attend Preview Day. We will contact all current families in April about the re-enrollment and sibling enrollment process.

How long is the Prospective Student List?

The length of the list depends on the level of interest for each class. Some classes have plenty of spots and everyone on the prospective list will receive an offer. However, others may only have a few spots available and only a few on the list will receive an offer. Our most popular classes are typically Mikan, Kinder, JFL 1 and JFL 2.

If I was on the Prospective Student List last year, do I need to re-attend Preview Day the following year?

It’s a good idea. We will make every effort to try to contact families who have already been on waiting lists the prior year if we were unable to find a spot for them. However, we are a volunteer-run school, and record-keeping of this nature can be tricky. Attending Preview Day ensures that we will have up to date information for you and your child for the upcoming year. Please let us know that you had previously been on a prospective student list.

Is enrollment first-come, first-served?

No. Due to the number of people who want to enroll and the capacity of each class, we have a process for enrolling new families that begins with attending a Preview Day.

In general, our priority for enrollment is as follows:

  1. current students

  2. siblings of current students

  3. families who attended a Preview Day and joined the Prospective Student List

  4. any other families as space allows who filled out the Enrollment Interest Form
