Setsubun & Mamemaki

In Japan, Setsubun (a day marking the  end of Winter and beginning of Spring) is celebrated on the day before the first day of Spring (Risshun) based on the the traditional calendar.   Part of the traditional ritual is to drive out evil by throwing “lucky  beans” at an Oni or devil (actually some of our parents wearing colorful  masks!).
